New To Counter-Strike? Want A Few Tips....

If you have just started playing Counter-Strike and have not quite got used to the ways of the game here are a few tips that will help you on your way.

Burst Firing

When playing Counter-Strike you may have noticed that when you are firing at someone from distance you fire at them for a while and they always seem to kill you. This is probably because they are firing in 1-5 shot burst and you are holding your fire button down.

When firing at distance it is very important to fire in bursts, this increases accuracy and will give you a better chance of putting up a good battle. When firing at range and in bursts you can also make it harder for your opponent by crouching and making yourself a smaller target.

Team Play

When you are new to the game you will stand a better chance if you follow a group of your team mates. This will give your team a better chance of survival and also yourself. When in your groups you may also learn a few tricks of the trade of these players. Following their experience will hopefully lead to you becoming a better player.

Tactics

When you happen to die in a round and are waiting for the round to finish, look to see if any of your team mates are dead, if they are try and sort some tactics out for the next round. This gives you and your team a better chance of winning the round. Tactics could include sticking together, directions in which you will move, timimg of rushes etc.

You could also try following your opponents on 'chase-cam' to see where they sit, what their tactics are, any weaknesses/strengths they may have.

Quick Movement

If you happen to be on your own or in a small group and are exploring the map for your enemies and you have a suspicion that they may be waiting or protecting one area. Your best means of staying alive are moving quickly, for example if you are approaching the bomb site as a Counter Terrorist jump around corners so if there happens to be and opponent there they have less chance of hitting you if you are in the air, you also have more time to look and stand a better chance if there happens to be a camper there.

Always check spots that you wouldn't imagine someone to be in...the moment you get complacent, someone will be there, no doubt.

Basic Clan Tips

We would like to stress the importance of the following in a clan:

Communication
Co-operation
Leadership (Only For Team Leaders, or anybody hoping to wipe out their team leader hehe)

Communication

In Counter-Strike, communication is as important as any real world communication medium. Without proper communication, you will be thinking 'What the hell is he doing?' or your clan mates will think 'Where the hell is he? He's not in position'. When these kind of thoughts start festering in your mind, the mental part of the game can become interrupted, meaning you can't concentrate, and may start to think negative rather than postive ('I can't win if he's not there') which will have a detrimental effect on your team and could ruin your game.

So everytime your leader gives an order, try to reply "Roger" and this will boost confidence. When in position, reply "I'm in position", so that everyone is prepared for a fight with no fear because you know that cover is nearby. Never forget "enemy down" whenever your foe is dead, in order to inform team mates that your task is half completed. Add a "sector clear" if you are sure the place you guard is damn clear.

Not used to it? Try to play with PoD Bots and you will see how they use communication so well. So, Keep Talking!! (But, Never Talk Crap!)

Co-operation

There are some clans that I've seen that have bad co-operation, which no doubt results in their downfall. The team leader says "cover the bridge" but all the players want high frags so they rush like madmen with a gun in their hands. A group of well-organised enemies pop up somewhere along they way, meaning they won't, and don't get very far. Panic? RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! But before you can get cover, you're dead.....too late to co-operate now.

In Counter-Strike clan matches, if you do things your own way, you'd be as well committing suicide, because you won't get very far. If you want to win, always, yes always...co-operate. Any team orientated event/game requires co-operation, so why not do it.

There's a chinese proverb; 'Co-operation is STRENGTH'. This stresses the importance of co-operation. Very often you here people sigh "They are damn damn good, how the hell are we suppose to beat them?" Really? Think Again!! If your clan co-operates, it increases the chance of winning.

Leadership

Every clan has a clan leader (if you could actually call him that). His job is clear....to give out orders to the team and be in charge of the whole performance of clan, recruiting and so on. But it isn't as easy as you think. These days, team leaders are being let down. You'll often hear people whining to their team leader: 'You play like s***, why should I listen to you?' Here are a few ways to prevent that:

Apparently, the most difficult problem in order to get this strategy working is not time, money, or manpower, but the willingness of your teamates to listen. This might be easily achieved if the people you're playing with are clanmates or close friends, but random players are either there for simple Death Match, or are just plain ole' sonsabitches. First, assert yourself as leader....if you have a few players that recognize your self imposed authority, then you have accomplished your first goal and main objective. If successful, you now have something counter-strike was made for, teamplay.

Currently, your small band of loyal warriors are not afraid of dying, with exception to the true elite nerds out there. Psychologically, teamplay is very interesting and most people are willing to be a part of something. Strategy is the most important part, before you assume leadership, you should be VERY good with strategies and tactics. People do not follow losers, thats historically accurate. Make sure you know the map very well too, along with the following:

Guns
Where the enemy is concentrating resources
How to deal with the enemy
Where to send your teamates
What to send your teamates as (i.e. Sniper, CQCombatant, Rusher)

A Basic Clan Management Guide

This is the first time I have ever posted an article about management. The experience I have is limited, but I have managed online gaming clans as well as online communities for various other games so I'll try my best. Let's start with the basics.

One of the most important things is communication between the team. As with most businesses and corporations it is important that the level of communication is tight. In most cases online clans are likely to be spread across a fair distance so face-to-face communication will be rare. Methods of communication in this day and age are fairly advanced; so make full use of them.

There are numerous methods of communication available, these include the Internet (IRC, Instant Messagers, E-mail and Voice Comms), telephones and depending on the success rate of your clan you may even use mail to send sponsor contracts and player agreements which may need to be signed.

The line of communication I feel is the most important is the various voice communication programs that are used over the internet, such as TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. Note I am not just talking about in-game communication. By talking with your clan mates on a regular basis what will you improve?

Friendship.
Understanding of people's personalitys (Which in some cases will help you understand their style of play).
Communication in game is tough over the Internet, speaking on a daily basis could help improve this.

Try to get your team using one of the above voice comminication programs, but note despite some leagues and cups prohibiting use of such programs they can still be used as described above.

The team will often face a lot of pressure. Often individuals will be under very high pressure in particular situations. What's important is that they are able to release some of this pressure. When someone makes a mistake you have to be very careful what you say to them. Shouting and the like will just cause more problems. It is best to go over mistakes at the end of the game rather than during the game - doing so could cause arguments and cause team-play to fail drastically. Moral is the key - moral must be high even when you are down.

It is your job as manager to make your team aware of these issues. Don't be a dictator - but do set rules. Don't shout at or punish someone when they break these rules just remind them where they went wrong. Remember that Counter-Strike is a game and members want to get as much from it as you do.

Try to encourage friendship wherever possible. Organise a meet at your local town for a day, go out, have fun. I guarantee it will help your clan succeed in the long run.

Thats the basic side of things. Now we will look at the aspects of proper organisation. What exactly does 'organisation' involve?

Basic organisation of the team. Match schedules, practice schedules and keeping a pile of relevant information in regards to each member (Such as wonID's, phone numbers, names and addresses - anything that you may need in the future).
When organising an entrance to different cups and leagues (online and LAN based) be careful what you pick. Don't overload the team with matches but ensure they don't go long without proper games, doing so could effect their performance.
Organise bootcamps. Bootcamps offer the chance to get together and sort out tactics face to face, rather than yelling them down in-game voice comms.
Seeking and arranging sponsorship deals. I cannot offer a great deal of advice on this, but I advise you check out our Approaching a Sponsor article or this page if you are an eSports amateur/professional team member. My guidelines for seeking a sponsorship would be to think about what you can offer the company - they are not going to accept any agreement where your benefit outwieghs theirs.

Finally, some things to remember:

Dont demand respect from the team - earn it.
There may be times when you have to take stick from a member - bare it.
You only get one chance to get a good reputation - earn it and keep it!
